Let me get this straight...

NPR now commits itself to avoiding the worst excesses of “he said, she said” journalism.

It says to itself that a report characterized by false balance is a false report. It introduces a new and potentially powerful concept of fairness: being “fair to the truth.” My verdict: Bravo, NPR.

NPR commits itself as an organization to avoid the worst excesses of “he said, she said” journalism. It says to itself that a report characterized by false balance is a false report. It introduces a new and potentially powerful concept of fairness: being “fair to the truth,” which as we know is not always evenly distributed among the sides in a public dispute.

Way to go, NPR. Here’s hoping that the rest of the mainstream news media follows suit.

This is, in my opinion, the media issue of our time. False balance and false equivalency completely fails to inform people. It’s why people doubt evolution and global warming and the President’s citizenship.

Yes, there are two sides to every story, but often only one side is the truth. It’s not a journalist’s job to perpetuate phony controversies. It’s their job to uncover which side is telling the truth.

Oh, NPR.
